A man died at an oil well drilling site west of Killdeer while working on a drilling ring, officials say.

Kristopher Barnes, 32, of Minot was working at an Ensign U.S. Drilling site Thursday when he was struck by “blocks,” said Eric Brooks, U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration area director.

Emergency personnel arrived at 6:52 a.m. Barnes was located on the floor of the drilling rig, which sits approximately 30 feet above ground, according to the sheriff’s department. Ensign Employees had been performing CPR.

CPR was stopped at 7 a.m. and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Dunn County Coroner is performing an autopsy to determine the cause of death, according to the sheriff’s department.

An OSHA compliance officer was on site Friday investigating the incident, Brooks said.
